Watch Resident Evil: Death Island (2023) – In San Francisco, Jill Valentine faces a zombie outbreak and a new T-Virus, Leon Kennedy follows the trail of a kidnapped DARPA scientist, and Claire Redfield investigates a terrifying fish that is killing whales in the bay. Joined by Chris Redfield and Rebecca Chambers, they find a trail of clues from their separate cases all converging on the same location, Alcatraz Island, where a new crime has taken up residence and awaits their arrival. I’m always amazed at the prevalence of Resident Evil in our lives. How one of the first games I fell in love with as a kid, a campy zombie shooter, is somehow still around and continuing to gain momentum. Not a year goes by without a new Resident Evil game, movie or TV show, and while they don’t always hit the mark – like the recent Netflix adaptation – the fear of burnout hasn’t slowed Capcom down at all. Another live-action film is reportedly in development, while Resident Evil: Death Island, the fourth canonical Resident Evil animated film, was released today. Death Island has been advertised as the ultimate team-up film for Resident Evil fans; An Avengers-level gathering of the greatest heroes in RE history. If you want to see Leon and Chris twosome rocket launchers or Jill and Claire doing slow-motion backflips, there’s plenty of that, but there’s also a level of thematic depth here that you might not expect. Death Island is a story about how our trauma changes us and the difficult process of freeing ourselves from guilt. This is a far more affecting film than it has any right to be, and it doesn’t sacrifice the iconic Resident Evil action and gore to do so. Death Island is set in 2015, one year after the events of Vendetta, and two years after Resident Evil 6. Leon, working with the DSO, is searching for a kidnapped DARPA researcher when he meets Maria Gomez, who survived the events. Revenge. Meanwhile, Chris and Jill are investigating a zombie outbreak in San Francisco where they discover a new strain of the T-Virus. They take it to Rebecca Chambers to research it and develop a cure, but soon discover that no one infected has been bitten. At the same time, Claire learns about a mysterious sea creature that is killing whales in San Francisco Bay. All their separate investigations lead them to Alcatraz Island, where they encounter a criminal unlike any they have ever faced before.
